Fishing in the Low Country
The Charleston area has some of the best fishing in the United States. From Deep Sea Giants to Creek Shrimp
& Crabs, the seafood is plentiful and delicious. This low country fishing haven offers acres upon acres of
opportunities to catch sport fish in just about any way you can imagine to wet your line.
Perhaps the most popular fishing in Charleston is for Red Drum, also known as spot-tailed bass.
These strong fighters are known to grow to over 45” in length. They can be found in the creeks in and
around the Charleston area and Intra-Coastal Waterways as well as the Jetties at the Charleston Harbor.
You can use a variety of bait and fly-tackle for Reds but most commonly used are live shrimp and golden
spoon tackle. Other fishing around the Charleston area includes Flounder, Sheepshead, Winter Trout,
Croaker, and Tarpon.
Locals also enjoy crabbing, oystering, and shrimping in the creeks of the Charleston area. You can catch
delicious Blue Crab, bails of oysters, clams, gather muscles, catch conch, or bait cast your net for local
shrimp.
And if you are a little bit adventurous, the Golf Stream is located only 51 miles off Charleston shore.
Taking a deep sea fishing trip to the golf stream is worth the ride. You can catch blue and white Marlin,
Sail Fish, Sword Fish, Grouper, Red Snapper, Mahi-Mahi, Black Bass, Kobe, and Tuna
Whether you are up for a Deep Sea fishing adventure, a creek fishing day from you kayak, fishing the
Jetties of the Charleston Harbor, or fishing from the Folly Beach Pier or from the beach surf, you are
bound to have a great time fishing in the Low Country.
