Golf in Charleston
Charleston’s Legendary Golf History
Golf and Charleston have a long history together. Over 200 years ago, the first golf course and golf club
in the United States of America was founded in Charleston. In 1786 Harleston Green was established with the
South Carolina Golf Club in the modern day Peninsula Charleston area. In fact, the term “Greens Fees” is
thought to have been established by this golf club as fees members would pay to maintain the green space
of the golfing area. Today, the Harleston Green is a just a memory but this historic course helped
establish a golfing tradition in the Charleston Area that will last for many years to come.
